Newsstand

Newsstand

Magazine Titles and Display
The music magazines were placed on a tall stall that contains a lot of storage space to hold 8 magazines of each magazine company. The master head has been placed in the top, centre of the magazine and have a bold font. They magazine title has been displayed in a way that it’s easy for the audience to read the title and can be seen from a distance. The titles shown in the picture seem to have the same colour used, whether the colour is red, white, black, yellow and orange. The colours used the magazines are subtractive primary colours, which are colours that associated with reflected light – this is why they are mostly used for headings as we can see them from afar.
The magazines on the newsstand don’t overlap; they are all shown in full view. However, on the second shelf there are some that overlap – this may occur if the magazine behind isn’t that popular than the one in front or for the lower left third can been seen.

Noticeable features

I have noticed that the front covers of all the magazines on the newsstand all have a large image of an artist that is featuring in the magazine. The majority of the main images used are shot from mid-shot and long shot. If the photo is taken from a long shot then the heading will overlap the photo and if the photo is taken from mid-shot then the image will overlap with the heading. When the image overlaps the title it makes the image seem as if the photo is in 3D. The front cover is not over crowded with text, but has enough teasers and subheadings on it. The main highlights of the magazine are vivid and are in a different font.
The mastheads are written across in a horizontal direction; there not placed in a diagonal or vertical direction.  If the masthead starts with a capital letter the rest of the main heading will be in master head – this shows consistency through the whole title.  It’s very important that the magazine is also suited for the genre of the music. All of the fonts for the mastheads suit the genre of the magazine for example; the magazine ‘Vive le rock’ has a wavy effect to the font which signifies the movement of the guitar strings.
It’s important that the entire magazine features suits the genre so it will appeal to those that listen or read to the type of music.

The cover lines are Bold but are in smaller size, in compare to the other subheadings. If the cover line has an appealing text (e.g. rock tickets inside) then they will most likely be in a large and bold font to grab the audience attention.
The main image predominately is a large image that depicts an image of an artist that makes music for a particular genre. The artist in the picture doesn’t have to specifically feature in the magazine, but it is required, as you would want the artist to be relevant to the magazine.

Sometimes the main image won’t be the main the story for the magazine, sometimes they would have small images on the front cover, with a bold background colour to give the audience an insight of what will be inside the magazine/the hottest gossip.

Magazine distribution methods
Sale or Return – The distributions given have a certain amount of magazines to give to the retail outlet. E.g. 20 copies, only 15 to sell and the 5 remaining returned with no cost to the retailer.
Online distribution – online distribution is now the biggest method for anytime of distribution. Subscription is free on some sites, if the subscriber finds the articles interesting they can share the link on social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and Bebo etc.

Evaluation Of My college magazine

One of my individual tasks was to create my own front cover and contents page for a college magazine. Once I had completed the task, I was able to analyse my strengths, weaknesses and what I need to improve on.

What went well?

I did well at the photography, arranging the magazine features on the front cover and research.

For the front cover I wanted to have a college student of Leyton Sixth Form College as the main model – I took the model at mid shot, outside the main entrance of the college. I made sure that the student had identification that they are apart of the college (LSC ID badge). I had taken this image using an iPhone 4, which has a 6-megapixel camera. The photograph came out clear and I was pleased with how the photograph came out. I had taken this photo specifically outside as the sun was, which will give enough lighting in the photograph.

These Are the other photographs that I had taken:

As part of my plan for the front cover I wanted to add an anchorage. An anchorage adds meaning. E.g. an image that relates to the texts. The text for my anchorage was ‘Tracey has the last smirk’, in order for the text to relate to the image, I told Tracey to do a little smile so that the text relates to the image.

What I did well at - Researching
I did some research on what college magazines contain in their contents page and what they have on the front cover.
As any other college magazine, they always have a photograph of the student as the front cover – the student is taken from a medium shot (from the waist up), the student looking towards the audience, smiling to give a warm feeling and appeal the audience. If the model isn’t looking to the camera /audience then there will normally be an anchorage to relate to the models actions.

What went well: Arranging the magazine features
During a lesson with my teacher Scott, I learnt to name and analyse magazine features, especially the main features included. In my magazine I included, an anchorage, barcode and teasers. I arranged the page so that the teasers are on the right hand side and the anchorage is on the left hand side near the image. I only had three sections on my front cover because I didn’t want to make the front over crowed with text.
I had made the heading large so that it was easy for viewers for read and make the magazine stand out. I used the colour green as its Leyton’s signature colour and I wanted the magazine to be a good representation of the college.
I was able to use the space provided, I filled up the pages by adding large images, large text and giving the background a colour. I particular found that the contents page went well as the contents page was presentable and in my opinion looked like a decent piece of work for a first time try. It has all the contents page requirements: subheadings, images and a bold title.
What do I need to improve on?
Once I had completed the task I was able to recognise my weakness through the task. What I need to improve on the most is the placement of adverts. On the contents page, I was confused of where to place the advert – I found this a difficulty as I didn’t want the advert to overlapping anything. For me to avoid me overlapping anything I placed the advert in the middle of the page where there was gap, where it was easier to notice. I also need to improve on Photoshop, as I’ve only used the program once. In order for me to improve I will need to play around with it more and ask for help.
Key Points of development.
1.      It is important to have a target audience for your magazine as that it’s relevant to the audience. E.g. if you do a magazine targeted to women, you would do articles or pages about fashion (this is something that women like)
2.      It’s also required to do research on what appeals the audience; this makes it easier on how to grab the audience’s attention. It can be anything from freebies to competition that people may take part in.

Contents Page for LSC

My Contents Page for my College Magazine.

Front Cover for LSC

My Front Cover for my College Magazine

LSC contents page Draft.

The image above is my contents page draft that I had drawn.

LSC draft front cover.

This is a draft of what I would like the magazine to look like. Some things may be added if its needed (e.g. images, text). I didn't want to add too much to the font cover because I don't want it to look too over crowed with text.
