Front Cover Design & Masthead

Images will be on the front cover, contents page and double page spread. There should be a form of constancy, whether it’s the size of the images used, font size and colour scheme.  There will be a colour scheme inside the magazine, preferably the colours used in the primary colour wheel. Using a colour scheme shows a form of professionalism, it serves a mean of communication medium. A colour scheme also helps improve presentation and advertisement.

Colour Scheme Chosen:

The main colour scheme is red, white and black - as the magazine is featuring a new artist, some coverlines on the front cover will be 'neon green' as the artist is called 'Neon Eniola' and as her favourite colour is neon green.

Masthead

My chosen masthead is the image shown on the left. I had chosen this particular masthead as I wanted something simple and easy for viewers to read. I've decided to add the colour red as my background for my masthead so that the masthead looks 3D and gives a bold effect.

Contents page - The start of Raggeek

During the lesson, I had started designing my contents page for my magazine. I had used some design features from my college magazine to create my desired piece.

I had also followed my design brief that I had drawn out, so I was aware of what I had to do. In my lesson I was able to add in the subheadings, text and colour (to the subheadings) and page numbers to start the process of later completing my contents page.

Model Props

I had planned out my desired outfit and make-up for my model. As my music genre is Hip-House it's more associated around Old School fashion - this includes: baggy clothing, bamboo earrings , dr martens etc.

The make-up that I will use, will be neutral colours that will bring out the models skin complexion.

The images below shows a rough idea of that I want my model to wear.

Model/Location

MODEL

In order for my magazine to be complete I needed a model that can fit in my magazine genre perfectly. I had chosen one of my close friends that is interested in a variety of music genre but its particularly has a passion for old school hip-hop and hip house music.

lOCATION

My desired photoshoot will take place at Alexandra Palace, near where they have a skate park. The skate park has a graffiti area where it portrays an urband and 1980's ghetto neighbour hood.

Magazine Proposal (Objective)

Objective
Raggeek’s objective is to serve a Hip-Hop and R&B fans the latest information about upcoming artists. It will also get music producers and music labels to discover new talent on from the magazine.
The title of my publication will be RAGGEEK which is related to people who are music freaks. I had created other names for magazine such as:
- No Label
      - Music Geek
      - Ragtime
      - Rag music
      - DOPE (a form of colloquial language)
·         - VYBZ

I chose RAGGEEK as it’s different and creative in compare to other magazine mast heads. I wanted a name that will appeal to young people and possibly make up a new slang word that will start a new trend. The word ‘RAG’ came from the word ‘Ragtime’, which is another word for music. I used this word as it sounds like a word that the black community will use. I then decided to remove the word ‘time’ and replace it with the word ‘geek’ – the word ‘geek’ means a person with an eccentric devotion to a particular interest e.g. a computer geek. Raggeek together adds meaning to the masthead and a connation to it.

Chosen Musical Genre
My chosen music genre is Hip house, which is mixture of house music and hip-hop. This is a new type of genre which has a growing popularity in the United States in the early 2010s.The style rose to prominence during the 1980s in New York and Chicago. However, in the UK, the first officially credited hip house track was 1987's ‘Rok Da House’ by UK producers the Beat masters featuring British female emcees the Cookie Crew. I chose to do this genre as this genre is not noticed that much as well as the more popular genres in hip-hop. The type of artists I will include in my magazine will be Azealia Banks, Queen Latifah, Fast Eddie etc (who are apart of Hip-House.) In my magazine will add updates of recent interviews of music artists.

What makes my magazine different?
I had spent a long time trying to answer this question. I wanted my magazine to be unique from others expect the fact that there isn’t a Hip-house magazine. First, I had wanted my magazine to be different by, including information of music sensations and most viewed artists on youtube within the genre hip-house however, anyone people can find out the most viewed acts on youtube act by looking at their homepage. After doing my research on that idea, I had changed my mind about it and thought that I can make my magazine different by providing information of hip house battles. This idea will encourage artists to take part in the event in order to get discovered by record labels/producers that may read the magazine.  I will also provide their information so that people can check their music out on sites, for example Youtube which is the most well known video sharing site to discover new talent.

Design Features
The design features that may be used in my magazine:
Semiotics – semiotics include denotation and connation.
Denotation will give the audience an obvious meaning (what you can see)
Connation will have a hidden meaning (symbology)
A large and bold mast head which can be seen from a long distance – if the mast head or front cover can be seen from a long distance, it can grab the audience’s attention to go closer to the magazine to see what’s interesting about the magazine that caught their eye.

The publishing company
A well suited publisher would be Bob Guccione’s company, who publish Spins’ magazine. The company publish different types of genres due to the fact of their previous genre they used to publish.

Target Audience
I had done research on the magazines Rolling stones and Spin about their target audience and their popular age group that reads their articles. The most popular age group that read their magazine is from 16- 30.
I’m going to aim my magazine at both genders and at middle class people who are able to buy the magazine and who are more likely to buy it.

Contents page for my magazine

Raggeek magazine is all about keeping things simple and letting the audience know about he latest artists with the genre Hip-House.

While designing my contents page I wanted my contents page to be a single page instead of a DPS, I did this because I wanted my DPS of my artist to be spectacular and eye catching. I want viewers to be thinking 'what's so good about this artist ?'

My contents page layout will be set out in a simplistic way so that it's understandable to viewers - some changes may be made if things don't work well together.

Front Cover for my magazine

For my Front cover page, I wanted the cover to be mainly emphasised on the new artist that is featuring in my magazine - in order for this to be a success I had designed my front cover so that it's simple and not too over crowed with cover lines and advertisements.

My front cover and contents page is inspired by Spins' magazine. While designing my front cover, I managed to do my research on spins magazine and how they advertise their new artists. Spin designs their front cover page so that its simple. The image depicting an image of the featuring artist was large and colourful so that all eyes will be focused on the new celebrity that is breaking through. The use of youthful colours are used to give a warm and happy mood to the magazine. Warm and vibrant colours attract the audience as they are appealing and can be seen from a distance.

For my magazine Raggeek I want to portray that my magazine is exciting and be appealing to my target audience (16-30).
